Cupid’s Arrow

Alan (Chandler Rylko) and Samantha (Najarra Townsend) fall in love and end up taking a science class taught by the creepy Professor Grimes (C. Thomas Howell). Soon Samantha is offered a coveted internship with the Professor, which she reluctantly accepts. Strangely Samantha’s affection for Alan ceases from one day to the next. Alan is devastated. Had her love for him really been true? Should he just walk away and believe that it was just life, and that he had to deal with it? His persistence leads to deadly discoveries about the science of love and the nature of the heart.

Fay Grim

Many years after her notorious husband, Henry Fool, fled after killing a neighbor, Fay Grim (Parker Posey) receives a visit from CIA agent Fulbright (Jeff Goldblum), who tells her that Henry is dead, but that some of his journals have been unearthed in France. She sets forth on a globe-trotting odyssey that soon leads to the discovery that he is alive, and his journals are more than they appear to be.

Zero Bridge

In the tradition of hard-hitting neo-realist filmmaking comes ZERO BRIDGE, the debut feature of Tariq Tapa, a US-born filmmaker of Kashmiri/Jewish-American descent. Having spent his childhood summers in India-controlled Kashmir with his father’s family, he was committed to making a film of quotidian life, far from Bollywood fantasies and Western news reports of terrorism: Dilawar is a teenage pickpocket whose escape plans are complicated when he develops an uneasy alliance with a woman (herself fleeing an arranged marriage) whose passport he has stolen. ZERO BRIDGE is a story of two young people’s struggle to retain their humanity, despite poverty, the traditional culture into which they’ve been born, and the fatalism, sexism and casual cruelty of their families.

The Pink Mirror/Gulabi Aaina

The film centers around two drag performers: Bibbo, a Bollywood fashion designer and Shabbo, a dancer, who have a strenuous and often volatile relationship with each other. Though they are known to quarrel often, they are always able to reconcile soon after an argument and prove to others that they care about each other. They both have an attraction to Samir; an aspiring actor whom Bibbo claims is her driver, despite Bibbo not owning a car. The situation is further complicated by Mandy, Shabbo’s young western apprentice, who reveals he’s gay and admits to being attracted to Samir. Throughout the escapades and comic antics that occur during the scuffle to win Samir’s heart, Bibbo learns Shabbo’s secret that she is HIV-positive, and is not revealing her secret to Samir or possibly even to the entire city.

Iris

IRIS pairs the 87-year-old Maysles with Iris Apfel, the quick-witted, flamboyantly dressed 93-year-old style maven who has had an outsized presence on the New York fashion scene for decades. More than a fashion film, the documentary is a story about creativity and how, even at Iris’ advanced age, a soaring free spirit continues to inspire. IRIS portrays a singular woman whose enthusiasm for fashion, art and people are life’s sustenance and reminds us that dressing, and indeed life, is nothing but an experiment. Despite the abundance of glamour in her current life, she continues to embrace the values and work ethic established during a middle-class Queens upbringing during the Great Depression. I feel lucky to be working. If you’re lucky enough to do something you love, everything else follows.

The Good Doctor

Dr. Martin Blake, who has spent his life looking for respect, meets an 18-year-old patient named Diane, suffering from a kidney infection, and gets a much-needed boost of self-esteem. However, when her health starts improving, Martin fears losing her, so he begins tampering with her treatment, keeping Diane sick and in the hospital right next to him.

The Black Dahlia Haunting

LOS ANGELES, 1947 – an aspiring actress named Elizabeth Short is found brutally murdered in an empty lot in Los Angeles. The media dubs her “THE BLACK DAHLIA” due to her pen chance for dark clothing. Her murder remains unsolved to this day. Although, it’s not without its suspects.LOS ANGELES, NOW – a young woman, Holly, is visiting Los Angeles from New York City after she is informed of the brutal murder of her father and stepmother by her younger brother Tyler, who is blind. Upon meeting Tyler’s psychiatrist, Dr, Owen, Holly soon becomes aware that she is not in full possession of the facts surrounding the murder. Plagued by violent dreams, Tyler has been drawing the face of a woman he could have never possibly met, a woman identical to Elizabeth Short. As Dr. Owen continues to evaluate Tyler’s condition, he learns that Tyler “speaks” to Elizabeth, and may have ordered him to murder his parents. In essence, “hurting the ones who hurt him”. Holly soon begins seeing Elizabeth as well, culminating in Elizabeth’s spirit paying her a visit, proclaiming to Holly that she can set her free from all of her burdens. Consumed by the spirit of the Dahlia, Holly engages in a war with not only herself, but also the dark figures revealing themselves around her, encouraged by Elizabeth to “hurt the ones who hurt her”.

Race

The incredible true story of Olympic legend Jesse Owens is vividly brought to life in Race. In his epic quest to be the greatest athlete in history, Owens (Stephan James, Selma) chooses to compete in the 1936 Berlin Olympics, where he must overcome not only elite competition, but also the brutal racial climate of Adolf Hitler’s Germany. Also starring Jason Sudekis (We’re the Millers) and Academy Award® winners Jeremy Irons and William Hurt, Race is a film about courage, determination, tolerance, friendship and trust that critics are calling “Movie magic!” (Brian Truitt, USA TODAY).
